Supplemental care
and marketing tips: There is very little postharvest
care information regarding this species but, because the chrysanthemum
is a close relative, sunflowers should be treated just like mums.
Length of life often is determined more by leaf yellowing or desiccation
than by flower problems. This species gained prominence in the late
1980s and 1990s. Perhaps smaller flower heads have stimulated the
increased popularity. Several horticultural forms differ in head
size, plant height, oil content and flower (ray) color. Double versus
single flowers are used for both ornamental and food purposes.
Botanical name:
Helianthus annuu
Genus pronunciation: he-Ii-AN-thus
Common relatives: Gerbera, lettuce, chrysanthemum,
chicory and aster
Botanical fun facts:
Helianthus is from the Greek helios, the sun, and
anthos, a flower.
Ethylene sensitive:
It is not ethylene sensitive.
Storage temperature
(three days or fewer): 36-38 degrees Fahrenheit
*
Storage temperature (more than three days): 32-34
degrees Fahrenheit *
Purchasing hints:
No yellow or wilted leaves should be present.
End-user life:
6 - 12 days
Special concerns:
Water stress problems are common and are made more
obvious by the flower head weight. To make sure flowers are hydrated
properly, use a hydrating agent, cut underwater or use warm water.
Leaf yellowing may also appear; there is no known cure.
